Why I created Mental Men

Men’s mental health is being spoken about more than ever before, and that’s a positive step. But the truth is stark. Suicide remains the biggest killer of men under 50, and the numbers continue to rise.

The world now recognises this is an important issue. However, if awareness alone worked, the statistics would be falling. Something isn’t connecting.

Too often, the public conversations around men’s mental health feature celebrities, athletes, or people from positions of privilege. Those stories have value, but they can feel distant from the struggles most men face day to day.

Real Stories from Real Men

I want to create real conversations with real men, everyday blokes who’ve faced tough times and found a way forward. This isn’t about rags-to-riches stories. It’s about becoming a better dad, a better friend, a better partner. It’s about overcoming substance issues, rebuilding confidence, finding purpose at work, or simply learning how to steady your mind when life feels overwhelming.

Success looks different for everyone. What matters is balance, health, and progress. By sharing these stories, I want to show that no matter where you are right now, change is possible.

The Goal

While the subject is serious, we don’t want these conversations to feel heavy or hopeless. Some of the most powerful moments in dark times come with laughter, and that spirit runs through what we do. Expect honesty, impact, and insight, but also warmth, humour, and connection.

The goal is simple. To spark conversations that actually resonate, highlight the actions that make a difference, and over time, uncover the patterns that help men move from struggle to strength.

Because talking about mental health is just the start. Figuring out what really works is where change begins.

Why this matters to me

If I’m totally honest, it’s because I’m tired of men’s mental health being a constant talking point, but with little in the way of real solutions, and more importantly, results. I’ve sadly known too many men who made the fatal decision they couldn’t come back from, and many more who are struggling day to day without any light at the end o

If I’m totally honest, it’s because I’m tired of men’s mental health being a constant talking point, but with little in the way of real solutions, and more importantly, results. I’ve sadly known too many men who made the fatal decision they couldn’t come back from, and many more who are struggling day to day without any light at the end of the tunnel.

I’ve always been pretty open, and I don’t shy away from admitting there have been times in my life when I’ve felt low, overwhelmed, or lost. Talking to someone did help in those moments, but for me it was always temporary and what truly made a difference was taking action by building discipline into my life.

For me, that looks like waking up early to walk my dog (Ricky, pictured above), keeping active, eating a balanced diet, and moderating my drinking. These habits keep my energy levels up and help me maintain a positive mindset. But I also know my situation is different...I don’t have kids, a chronic illness, or a marriage under strain. Everyone’s challenges are unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

And that’s why I've created Mental Men. I want to explore and share the different ways men have managed to turn things around, in the hope that others will hear something they can relate to, and start to believe they can recover too.
